In the 1785 Census for Avoyelles Post, Louisiana, it shows Jacques Nicholas Chatelain II as Age 23.
It is believed that Nicholas Chatelain lived at Avoyelles Post from about 1779/1780 to 1793. He and his second wife, Elizabeth Malbert, were present for the succession inventory of her father, Jean Baptiste Malbert, at Avoyelles in 1793.

The family next can be placed at Rapides Post, in the vicinity of Bayou Boeuf, Bayou Lamourie, in 1796. According to the records of public land claims, Nicholas was awarded patents to two large tracts. One tract of 656 acres is located at the junction of Bayou Boeuf and Bayou Lamourie and near the present location of LSU-Alexandria. The other tract of 1,015 cares, is located four miles southeast of the first, in the area called Chatelin Lake today. This second tract was sold to Francois Tournier of Avoyelles.

Jacques Nicholas Chatelain's baptism is recorded in St Louis Cathedral Baptismal Book IV. - January 1, 1759 to April 27, 1762. (New Orleans Genesis, v. VII). His funeral is recorded in St. Louis Cathedral Funeral Records 1803-1815.

Jacques Nicolas Chatelain II was usually called "Nicolas".
The birth of Nicolas III, places Nicolas Chatelain II and his family at Avoyelles Post in January, 1780. It is evident that he moved from New Orleans to Avoyelles with the Juneau family about the time, or earlier. Catherine Juneau, wife of Nicolas Chatelain, died shortly after the birth of her sixth child, Pierre Paul.
Nicolas Chatelain II, widower of Catherine Juneau, married a second time in a civil ceremony a Avoyelles Post on February 12, 1790 to Elizabeth Malbert, widow of Joseph Rabalais Senior.
Nicolas Chatelain II and Elizabeth Malbert has one child, Manuel Henri Chatelain, who was born in 1792. He was baptized on May 26, 1793, and his baptism is registered at New Orleans.

The Rapides Post census of 1799 shows Nicolas Chatelain II as a widower, indicating that Elizabeth Malbert was deceased by that time.
Nicolas Chatelain II was twice married, with issue of at least seven children. He lived in Avoyelles for most of his married life. In spite of this, not much has been learned or discovered of his descendants.
Jacques Nicolas Chatelin's baptism is recorded in St. Louis Cathedral Baptismal Book IV. - January 1, 1759 to April 27, 1762. (New Orleans Genesis, v. VII). His funeral is recorded in St. Louis Cathedral Funeral Records 1803 - 1815.
Jacques Nicolas' name appeared in several colonial documents that were transcribed from Spanish archives by Winston De Ville in " Calendar of Louisiana Colonial Documents, Volume One, Avoyelles Parish 1786 - 1803." The following entries was listed:
25 May 1791 - Bond of Nicolas Chatelin and Isavel Malvert, his wife, in favor of Jean Baptiste Nicolet, habitant of Pointe Coupee.
12 Sept 1791 - Pitition of Nicolas Chatelin against Jean Baptiste Malvert, his father-in-law, for being abused.
3 Nov 1791 - Response of Nicolas Chatelin against Widow Dominique Coco, charged with the care of his daughter.
24 Nov 1791 - Declaration by Joseph Joffrion on receiving payment from Isavel Malvert, widow of Joseph Rabalais, now married to Nicolas Chatelin.
4 May 1793 - Copy of the criminal suit instigated by Nicolas Chatelain, in which he states that his negro, Augustin, was killed by a negro named Louis, slave of Noel Soileau.
5 Oct 1793 - Sale of habitation containing five arpents of land to Nicolas Chatelain from Raffety.
7 July 1794 - Receipt signed by Nicolas Chatelain.
6 March 1795 - Copy of petition by Noel Soileau relative to the affairs against Nicolas Chatelin.
2 Nov 1797 - Petition of Isabelle Rabalais, widow of Dominique Coco, against Nicolas Chatelain, for payment for care she gave his daughter. (The original petition was filed on 3 Sept 1790 by Dominique Coco. She wrote a letter to the commandant of Avoyelles Post, Noel Soileau, asking him to present her petition concerning the debt owed by Nicolas Chatelain to the governor).
3 March 1799 - Sale of ten arpents of land by Nicolas Chatelin to Guillaume Gauthier.
