Dr. L.J. Mayeux Jr, Avoyellean of 2003
From the Sunday Avoyelles Journal
Avoyelles coronor Dr. L. J. Mayeux, Jr. has been named Avoyellean 2003. The announcement that the physician had won the annual award was made at a gathering of his staff and family who were honoring for his recent retirement from his daily practice.
Mayeux was suprised with the presentation, which was is always kept secret until a group of former Avoyelleans show up unnanounced with the plaque. The award is sponsored by the Avoyelles Journal, and has been given every year since it was started in 1976. Readers are asked to nominate people of Avoyelles who have done outstanding volunteer work or gone beyond the call of duty to help make Avoyelles a better place to live.
Mayeux was surrounded by his family when the announcment was made by Mansura Mayor Harold Quebedeaux, who was last year’s honoree. Also present for the announcment were former Avoyellean honorees Carlos A. Mayeux, Jr., Aggie Neck, Faye Truex, Julie Durand and Eleanor Gremillion.
“This is a great honor”, Mayeux said about the award, who spoke with a straight from the heart emotionally charged voice. He commented that he was very happy to be on a list of names of people honored over the years including his role model, Dr. F. P. Bordelon, Jr., who was also coronor and a big volunteer like Mayeux.
Mayeux has served Avoyelles in volunteer capacities ranging from being the team doctor for the Marksville Tiiger football squad to countless hours with the Ducks Unlimited organization. He work with improving the duck population in Louisiana led him to being both state and national president of that organization.
